Sorry for the late response, but I'm glad you did that exercise. I feel like individuals who are volunteering and not doing a master's in social work should also be required to do such exercises. I feel like it's irresponsible to have people volunteer if they don't have the right motivations and mindset for it; at least it would get them thinking about their true motivations.

Your post reminds me of an exercise we had to do in one of my social work classes: Figure out our motivations behind getting into the human services field, so we can keep our bias in check, and focus on the person and/or community, not ourselves.

Some answers were surprising.

Emily, Project Health sounds like an incredible organization. I read about them and their holistic approach to addressing low-income individuals' health needs is an incredible model (and it's so simple - who'd have thought that such an idea was revolutionary? it should be commonplace!) and it's wonderful that you had the opportunity to work with them during college.

I completely agree that after I graduate, I hope to be involved in similar volunteer opportunities. While I will be working full-time in the non-profit sector, there is still something to be said about the personal connection and the difference I feel I can make through working directly one-on-one with individuals. I think similar programs need to be developed that allow full-time individuals to dedicate a few hours during the week (or on the weekend) to volunteering in the same way. There should be weekly, regular pro-bono opportunities provided by firms, companies, and other organizations that allow employees to contribute regularly in a similar way.

True that it's donor-focused, but I think that these models (LIFT, Project Health, etc) also are very effective in terms of assisting the beneficiaries and taking into account their needs. Moreover, individuals who have meaningful volunteer experiences are more likely to continue in public interest and social justice work down the line. Those with less satisfactory volunteer experiences tend to feel they cannot make an impact, and are more likely to leave the public sector altogether.

Thanks, I definitely strive to be critical of my actions and my volunteer projects. It's important to look at your own actions with a critical eye, otherwise there is a real danger that you will be contributing to ineffective or simply bad aid/development/non-profit projects. As I said, however, there's still a lot I have to change and improve upon; there's a lot I don't know about the effectiveness of projects I work with, and a constant need to make further progress/improvements.

Great to hear you've made so many connections volunteering. Yeah, it makes a difference to see and feel like you're making progress towards a goal, but there's always frustrations. Continue to be true to your cause and critical of your motivation and I don't think you'll have to worry about the "giver" syndrome that has infected so many.

I'm totally with you. I joined a similar program in college (called Project Health: http://www.projecthealth.org/) that had college students doing very similar things but in teams and in community clinics. That experience was what turned me on to during work in the nonprofit space.

My question ever since leaving college, though, has always been: where have these volunteer opportunities gone? I can still volunteer at a food bank and do pro bono consulting, but why is it that there aren't any great organizations out there leveraging these volunteers coming out of the LIFT and Project Health programs that still want to work with people and help them in the way that we did during college?

I realize that this is an entirely donor-focused rather than recipient-focused question, but on the other hand, I also don't really see why the skills I and others learned during college can't still be put to good use now.
