Thanks so much for that article! It's really good, and also...horrifying..

"Rikers Island is, in many ways, experiencing the mirror opposite trend of Manhattan. Ninety-five percent of the inmates in New York City jails are African-American or Latino, while these two groups make up only about half the city’s population."

This is horrible, and yet, not at all surprising.

I recently visited and took a tour of the D.C. jail as part of my internship, and I saw the same thing.

It seemed like almost every individual I saw was a black man. I'm sure that even in jail, about 90% of individuals are black!

This is segregation, plain and clear. It's a mass roundup of all the black men in our neighborhoods deemed 'dangerous' by society's wealthy and powerful - the white men.

I don't know how this exists in our society. I am truly angered by this.

Hey, both your blog post and this blog post on how structural racism is leading to a whiter manhattan and a decidedly less white Rikers Island came up on the same day, so I thought that I just had to let you know about it: http://www.racismreview.com/blog/2010/07/07/str...

Very interesting, and almost makes me glad to leave whitening Manhattan for ... highly-segregated Chicago. lol.
