I’ve been an internet addict for a long time. Much longer than many of you may know! It all started when I was in middle school; being an only child, I didn’t have siblings (or pets) to occupy my time and so, of course, I turned to the Internet. Back then, I spent hours on Neopets (remember those days?) and soon, I delved into web design and created my first website at the age of 12 (of course, it was the Geocities kind…). I went on to buy my own domain and spend many painstaking hours poring over minute details of layout designs on Photoshop. Yes, I was addicted. I couldn’t get enough of it – blends, layouts, patterns, textures, vectors, wallpapers. You name it, I designed it. And I was pretty good at it too.
Fast forward to 9 years later, and I’m still continuing my love affair with the Internet. But my passion has spread to other aspects of the web. As the web has become increasingly social, and as web design has become increasingly about using existing frameworks for blogging (e.g. WordPress, Blogger), so has my passion adapted. Coding was never my thing, so I eagerly adopted the WordPress Tumblr Blogger Livejournal Xanga platform and began blogging. I stopped designing and started writing. I loved it – but I was neglecting the part of me that enjoyed designing.
All of this is to say: I recently got my first paycheck (yay!) for my first full-time job ever, and my friends told me, “Go out and celebrate! Buy yourself a cute pair of shoes!” And while I laughed and agreed with the suggestion, I really didn’t want a pair of shoes. Instead, I went out and bought myself a shiny brand-new version of the Headway theme. And then I proceeded to spend half of the labor day weekend in a semi-hermit-like state, designing my new website!
So I present to you all: the product of my years of addiction to Photoshop. My first (almost completely) original design for this blog. Check out the new and improved Justice for all, and akhilak.com (my landing page for this blog). I like this design because it’s bright and dynamic, and the world map represents my passion for human and civil rights issues both in the U.S. and across the globe. I also love the Headway Theme, and I definitely endorse it for those of you looking to have an easily customizable WordPress theme with an endless array of wonderful options. It’s definitely worth the money. Hopefully this represents the end of my design ADD for this blog (as some of you have probably noticed). Please let me know what you think!
And keep your eyes peeled: I have a couple of interviews with students & young professionals working towards social change coming up, starting tomorrow. I hope you had a wonderful and productive weekend, and I’m looking forward to a great month.
